History of the Gallery
The Yale University Art Gallery was established in 1832 when John Trumbull donated his works. As the first university art museum in the United States, the current museum is housed in three historic buildings. Street Hall, designed by Peter Bonnett Wight and completed in 1866, is a Neo-Gothic structure that originally served the Yale School of Fine Arts, with classrooms and studios on the first floor and a gallery on the second floor. The Yale Art Gallery, completed in 1928, was designed by Egerton Swartwout and was inspired by Florentine architecture, connected to Street Hall by a bridge and featuring architectural details with artistic personifications. In 1953, the Yale University Art Gallery and Design Center, designed by Louis Kahn, opened as his first masterpiece. This modernist building is known for its open exhibition and studio spaces and structural and engineering innovations. Renovations carried out from 2004 to 2012, designed by Ennead Architects, further enhanced the gallery’s educational role.

Louis Kahn’s Expansion
Louis Kahn (1901-1974), one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, was known for his emphasis on materials and textures, designing functional yet monumental buildings that interact with light and space. His notable works include the Salk Institute in California, the Exeter Library, and the Bangladesh National Parliament. The Yale Art Gallery was Kahn’s first modern building, innovative within Yale’s classical architectural context. Kahn’s design clearly distinguishes between primary and secondary spaces, a concept that was further developed in his later works. The south wall of the building was finished with brick to harmonize with the existing Old Art Gallery, while the façade design hid the glass curtain wall to blend the new brick wall with the existing gallery.

Meeting of Past and Present
While it may seem ordinary by today’s standards, the boxy, flat-roofed Art Gallery was revolutionary in the traditional architectural context of Yale at the time. Kahn divided the space into primary and secondary zones, with exhibition rooms on either side of the central secondary spaces, which included stairs, restrooms, elevators, and utility rooms. The circular staircase in the secondary space features a triangular ceiling designed to reflect natural light. Kahn frequently incorporated basic geometric forms like triangles and circles into his designs. The floors were designed with a tetrahedral waffle structure, allowing for clean exhibition spaces without columns, and utilities were integrated within the tetrahedral spaces. The south wall, facing Chapel Street, was finished with brick to match the Old Art Gallery, and the entryway was aligned parallel to Chapel Street, with the glass curtain wall hidden to harmonize the new brick wall with the existing gallery. The gallery’s western view presents a completely different appearance, with the glass curtain wall visible along the entryway. This innovative design was a stark contrast to the windowless brick wall on the south side.
