Role of an Artist
What is the societal role of art and artists? Is it simply about conveying beauty and eliciting emotions from people through it? However, beyond that, there are artists who convey a social voice. Many artists pursue pure art irrespective of societal or political environments, and their choice is respected. Simultaneously, there are artists who actively engage with social issues, not avoiding expressing their intentions. While the impact of their voices may seem modest if they represent universal human values rather than advocating for a specific group, I want to express sincere gratitude. Even values considered commonsensical can be perceived differently based on individual perspectives, societal norms, culture, generation, etc., hindering artists from freely expressing themselves. In this text, I aim to explore artist Keith Haring, who fearlessly confronted bias, hatred, and discrimination.
예술가의 역할
예술과 예술가의 사회적 역할은 무엇일까? 단순하게는 아름다움을 전하는 것, 그것을 통해 사람들에게 감동을 주는 것이 아닐까? 하지만 그것을 넘어 사회적인 목소리를 전달하는 예술가들도 존재한다. 많은 예술가가 사회, 정치적 환경과 무관하게 순수한 예술을 추구한다. 물론 그들을 존중한다. 동시에 사회적 문제들을 회피하지 않고 그들의 의도를 직접 표현하는 예술가들도 많이 활동하고 있다. 필자는 그들의 목소리가 어떤 집단의 주장을 대변하는 것이 아니라 인류 보편적 가치를 전하는 것이라면 미약하지만, 진심 어린 감사를 표하고 싶다. 아무리 상식적으로 옳다고 여겨지는 가치도 각 개인과 사회, 문화, 세대 등등 여러 조건에 따라 다르게 받아들여질 수 있고 이는 예술가들이 자유롭게 표현하는 것을 방해하기도 한다. 이번 글에서는 편견과 증오, 차별을 두려워하지 않은 예술가 키스 해링에 대해 알아보려고 한다.
Accessibility of Art
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1980, Keith Haring grew into a graffiti artist in New York, becoming a prominent figure in pop art. Although he attended the Ivy Professional Art School in Pittsburgh, he left school to focus on his art in New York. He enjoyed drawing with chalk on subway billboards, albeit illegally. Leaving his mark, such as his iconic symbol, the Radiant Baby, he turned various parts of the city into his experimental space to communicate his language to people. While many associate Keith Haring with cute comic-like works featuring bold lines, he produced numerous complex pieces. Drawings depicting humans being attacked by aliens, exaggerated depictions of genitalia, and the distress of Earth undergoing abuse can also be found, evoking discomfort and unease. However, understanding the values he wanted to convey makes the meaning of his works clear. He expressed thoughts on conflict, discrimination, prejudice, and went on to address societal issues such as AIDS and drug addiction in his unique way.

1980년 미국 펜실베이니아 레딩에서 태어난 키스 해링은 뉴욕에서 그라피티 예술가로 성장하며 팝 아트의 대표적 작가로 활동했다. 그는 피츠버그의 아이비 프로페셔널 아트 스쿨에 다녔지만, 자신만의 예술에 집중하기 위해 학교를 그만두고 뉴욕에서 작품활동을 시작한다. 그는 지하철 광고판에 분필로 드로잉 하는 것을 즐겼다. 물론 불법이긴 하다. 도시 곳곳을 자신의 실험실 삼아 자신의 언어를 사람들에게 전달하는 동안 Radiant Baby 같은 그의 상징적 기호를 남긴다. 많은 사람이 키스 해링을 생각하면 귀여운 만화투의 굵은 선을 활용한 작품들을 떠올리지만, 굉장히 난해한 작품들도 많이 존재한다. 외계인에게 공격받고 괴롭힘과 고문을 당하는 인간의 모습, 과장되게 표현한 성기, 학대당하는 지구 등 당황스럽고 심하면 불편함을 자아내는 드로잉도 심심치 않게 찾아볼 수 있다. 하지만 그가 말하고 싶었던 가치들을 알게 된다면 바로 작품이 의미하는 바를 쉽게 알 수 있다. 그는 갈등과 차별, 편견과 맞서 싸우고 나아가 에이즈, 마약중독과 같은 사회 문제에 대한 생각을 자신만의 방식으로 표현했다.
Keith Haring’s Flagship Store
In 1986, Keith Haring opened a pop shop in New York to make his art more accessible to people. Combining art with everyday items like T-shirts, posters, and buttons, he endeavored to reach a wider audience. This space, initially intended for selling items, transformed into a culturally significant space similar to high-end commercial facilities. While selling goods, it also provided a unique experience, attracting the interest of many. Especially by adorning the interior walls with his works, he created an immersive space. Despite his courageous attempts, there were limitations. His challenges faced resistance from the traditional art world, and although many connected with his works, the societal themes he aimed to convey were sometimes trivialized.

1986년 키스 해링은 본인의 작품을 사람들이 더 쉽게 즐길 수 있도록 뉴욕에 팝 삽을 연다. 그는 예술을 티셔츠나 포스터, 버튼 등 일상적인 물건들과 결합하여 많은 사람이 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 노력했다. 대중문화와 예술의 경계를 허물어 자신이 말하고자 하는 주제를 더 많은 사람에게 전하고 싶은 바람에서 시작된 이 공간은 고급 상업 시설의 개념과 비슷한 문화적 공간으로 활용되었다. 물건을 팔기 위한 공간이지만 동시에 독특한 경험을 제공하면서 많은 대중의 관심을 이끌어 냈다. 특히 내부 벽을 자신의 작품으로 꾸미면서 쉽게 몰입할 수 있는 공간을 완성했다. 하지만 그의 용기있는 시도에도 한계는 존재했다. 그의 도전은 기존 미술계의 반발을 불러왔고 많은 사람이 자신의 작품과 가까워졌지만, 그가 말하고 싶었던 사회적 주제들은 가볍게 여겨지기도 했다.
Keith Haring’s Legacy
In his youth, influenced by his father, Haring dreamed of working with Disney. Unfortunately, his deteriorating health prevented this dream from materializing. The graphics produced by Disney itself have an allure, and the themes they address are similar to those of Keith Haring. While Disney’s intentions may be good, their overly expressive style can sometimes provoke people’s resistance. However, universal human values against discrimination and hatred should be respected regardless of the era. Although the collaborative work of Keith Haring and Mickey Mouse remains unseen, his legacy continues to contribute to society. The Keith Haring Foundation, preserving and managing his works, also makes significant contributions to addressing various social issues through donations, particularly in spreading accurate information and conducting research on AIDS. Even after his passing, the messages he wanted to convey to society still resonate with numerous people.
키스 해링의 유산
그는 어릴 때 아버지의 영향으로 디즈니와 작업을 해보고 싶은 꿈이 있었다. 그의 꿈은 악화한 건강상태 때문에 결국 이루어지지 못한다. 디즈니가 만들어내는 그래픽 자체도 매력이 있지만, 그들이 말하고 싶은 주제들도 키스 해링의 그것들과 비슷하다. 물론 디즈니 또한 아무리 그 의도가 좋다고 하더라도 너무 과한 표현으로 사람들의 거부감을 자극하기도 한다. 하지만 차별과 증오에 맞서는 인류 보편적 가치는 시대를 막론하고 존중되어야 한다. 키스 해링과 미키 마우스의 공동 작업을 보지 못해 너무도 아쉽지만, 그의 유산은 계속해서 사회에 이바지하고 있다. 그가 남긴 키스 해링 재단은 그의 작품을 보존하고 관리하며 여러 사회적 문제의 해결을 위해 기부도 하고 있다. 특히 AIDS에 관한 올바른 사실을 전달하고 연구하는데 크게 이바지한다. 생을 마감하고도 그가 사회에 던지고 싶었던 말들은 아직도 수많은 대중에게 전해지고 있다.
