The Object You’ve Always Known

Pick up a Faber-Castell 9000 graphite pencil and you’ll notice, even before you draw a single line, that something about it feels considered. The barrel is a deep, muted green — not the bright yellow of a school pencil, not an afterthought — and it is hexagonal, slightly faceted at the tip where it tapers to the lead. The gold lettering is stamped, not printed. The whole thing is just twelve centimetres of cedar and graphite, yet it carries the weight of a maker who has been doing this for a very long time. There is no mystery to why the Faber-Castell 9000 remains the pencil of choice for architects, illustrators, animators, and every kind of artist who spends real time thinking about what marks they make. It is one of those objects — like a well-designed fountain pen or a perfectly proportioned chair — that solves its problem so thoroughly it never needs to be redesigned.

A Carpenter’s Workshop in Stein, 1761

The story of Faber-Castell begins not with a count or a grand factory, but with a cabinet maker. In 1761, Kaspar Faber set up a small pencil-making operation in Stein, a town just south of Nuremberg in Bavaria. Pencil-making was a cottage industry in this corner of Germany — the Black Forest provided cedar, and the region around Nuremberg had long been the centre of European pencil manufacture. What distinguished the Fabers was a relentless interest in quality: better graphite, more consistent leads, tighter tolerances. The company passed through several generations of the family until it reached Lothar von Faber (1817–1896), who transformed it into one of the great industrial enterprises of the nineteenth century. Lothar contracted for exclusive rights to the finest graphite from Siberia, sourced Florida cedar for the barrels, and opened branches in New York, London, Paris, Vienna, and St. Petersburg. He also invented something we now take entirely for granted: the standardised hexagonal pencil. Before Lothar, pencils were round, square, or triangular — whatever the maker preferred. He petitioned the German Reichstag for trademark protection, becoming one of the first industrialists to understand that a brand was worth defending in law. His legacy was a company that knew precisely what it was and refused to drift from that identity.

Nuremberg’s Other Great Name

Stein is where the workshop stood, but part of why that address matters lies a few kilometres north. Nuremberg was the city of Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), the draughtsman who did more than anyone in northern Europe to make drawing an art in its own right rather than a rehearsal for painting. Dürer worked long before the graphite pencil existed — Praying Hands, made in 1508, is brush and ink on blue prepared paper — but the discipline that sheet represents is precisely the one the 9000 was built to serve: the patient, unglamorous study, drawn to be looked at rather than sold. Faber-Castell has never been shy about the connection. Its professional watercolour pencil range, 120 colours deep and still made in Germany, is named Albrecht Dürer, and the company’s headquarters sits a short drive from the artist’s city — the same small corner of Franconia, four and a half centuries apart.

The Birth of the Castell 9000

When Lothar’s heiress, Ottilie von Faber, married Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen in 1898, the company and its name were transformed. Alexander was not a passive inheritor. Seven years after the marriage, in 1905, he launched the pencil that would define the company for the next century: the Castell 9000. The green colour of the barrel was not a branding accident — it matched the colour of Alexander’s military regiment, a personal touch that became a signature the world would come to recognise. The pencil featured what the company called SV-bonding (Supracolor Verklebung), a process that bonds the lead to the cedar barrel along its entire length, not merely at the tip. This seemingly technical detail has a real consequence in the hand: where cheaper pencils snap when dropped, the 9000’s lead tends to stay intact. The jointing between Faber and Castell also introduced the castle crest into the branding — the logo of two jousting knights on horseback, supposedly inspired by a painting Alexander commissioned of two knights jousting with pencils. It sounds like a myth, but it is documented company history, and it captures something essential about Faber-Castell: the company takes drawing seriously enough to turn even its own name into a small piece of illustrated humour.

Reading the Scale — From 9H to 9B

The Castell 9000 is made in sixteen degrees of hardness, from 9H at the hardest end to 9B at the softest, with HB sitting at the midpoint. The logic of the scale is simple: H stands for hard (more clay in the mix, a paler and finer line), B for black (more graphite, a darker and softer mark). This means the harder grades — 4H, 5H, 6H — produce lines so pale and precise that they are almost invisible from a distance, ideal for the preparatory work of architects and technical draughtspeople who want construction lines that won’t compete with the final drawing. The midrange — 2H through 2B — covers most everyday sketching and writing. The softer grades — 4B through 9B — are where the drama lives: rich, dark, smudgeable tones that allow for the kind of gestural shadow work you see in life drawing and charcoal-adjacent portraiture. One of the pleasures of working across the full range is that the graphite itself has different textures at different hardnesses; a 9B line has an almost velvety quality that a 2H could never approximate, and experienced artists switch grades not just for darkness but for the physical sensation of mark-making. The Eames Lounge Chair is often cited as evidence that deep craft and daily usability are not at odds; the 9000’s grading system makes a similar argument about pencils.

Polychromos, Pitt Pens, and the Full Studio

The Castell 9000 is only the most famous member of a family that Faber-Castell has been building since the early twentieth century. In 1908, just three years after the 9000’s launch, Alexander introduced the Polychromos coloured pencils — a line that is, if anything, even more beloved among professional illustrators. Polychromos pencils are oil-based rather than wax-based, which means they layer without the waxy bloom that plagues cheaper coloured pencils; colours mix cleanly and hold their intensity over time. They come in 120 colours and are made to the same exacting standards as the 9000: high lightfastness ratings, break-resistant SV-bonded leads, the same distinctive green label. The company’s Pitt Artist Pens, with their permanent pigment-based India ink, complete the picture for line artists, comic illustrators, and manga artists who need a range of nib widths that will not skip or fade. Together these three product lines — graphite 9000, Polychromos, Pitt — represent something unusual in the art supply world: a coherent system from a single maker that covers nearly every mark-making need without requiring the artist to piece together tools from half a dozen different manufacturers.
