Today, I would like to take a closer look at my first fountain pen, the Lamy 2000. It is a representative work of Lamy, also known for the Safari. The reason I initially chose the Lamy 2000 is its clean design. However, can you believe that this fountain pen has a design dating back to the 1960s? While classic designs that are cherished over a long period always exist, creating such designs is not an easy task. Lamy entrusted the design of this writing instrument to the famous designer Gerd A. Muller at that time. He designed it in accordance with the Bauhaus spirit, where the form should be a result of function. “Form follows function” is a statement made by the architect Louis Sullivan. As someone who majored in architecture, I have heard this statement many times. Even now, many designers discuss the relationship between function and form to justify their designs. When different ideas collide, the criteria for judging whose design logic is more plausible often involve considering whether the form is essential. Of course, there are times when designers choose beautiful forms and decorative elements, but to retain only essential elements, one must always consider functionality. The Lamy 2000 embodies this prioritization of functionality in its design.
오늘은 나의 입문 만년필 라미(Lamy)2000에 대해 살펴보려고 한다. 사라피(Safari)로도 유명한 라미사의 대표작이다. 내가 처음 라미2000을 선택한 이유는 군더더기 없는 디자인이다. 그런데 이 만년필이 1960년대에 나온 디자인이라면 믿어지는가? 물론 긴 시간 사랑받는 고전들이 항상 존재하지만 실제로 그런 것들을 만들어내는 것은 쉬운 것이 아니다. 라미 사는 당시 유명한 디자이너 게르트 알프레드 뮐러 (Gerd A. Muller)에게 이 필기구의 디자인을 맡겼다. 그는 바우하우스 정신에 따라 디자인을 하게 되는데 어떤 것이든 그 형태는 기능에 따른 결과여야 한다는 정신이다. 형태는 기능을 따른다(Form follows function)는 건축가 루이스 설리번(Louis Sullivan)이 한 말이다. 건축을 전공한 필자가 너무나 많이 들은 말이다. 지금도 많은 디자이너들이 서로의 디자인에 정당성을 부여하기 위해 기능과 형태의 관계에 관해 이야기한다. 서로 다른 생각들이 부딪치면 누구의 디자인 논리가 더 그럴듯한지 판단하는 기준으로 그 형태가 반드시 필요한지 검토하게 된다. 물론 단순히 아름다운 형태, 최대한의 장식적 요소를 선택할 때도 있지만 꼭 필요한 요소만 남기기 위해서는 반드시 기능을 생각해야 한다. 이런 기능성을 우선으로 한 디자인이 라미2000에 고스란히 담기게 된다.
Since its initial release, there have been minor changes, but the overall design has been consistently maintained. The pen I purchased is the Makrolon model. It is made of a material similar to acrylic, with glass fibers added to polycarbonate. The stainless steel model also demonstrates the epitome of simplicity. The wire-shaped body has a matte, slightly rough texture, and a small glossy portion at the end of the cap adds a subtle touch. The seamless connection of the grip, body, and the meeting point of the body and the knob is almost imperceptible, enhancing the cap’s angular clip for a special feel. Both the clip and grip are made of stainless steel, featuring a brushed pattern that doesn’t create a sense of incongruity. The body has a window for checking the ink level, which does not compromise the overall unity. The nib is a hooded nib, partially covered, preventing ink drying. True to its functional design, every detail serves a purpose.
처음 출시 이후 작은 변경 사항들이 있었지만, 전체적인 디자인은 계속 유지되어왔다. 필자가 구매한 펜은 마크롤론(Makrolon) 모델이다. 아크릴과 비슷한 소재인데 폴리카보네이트에 유리섬유를 첨가했다고 한다. 스테인리스 모델도 마찬가지로 간결함의 끝을 보여준다. 유선형의 바디에 무광으로 조금 거친 질감을 가지고 있으며 캡의 끝에 아주 작은 유광 부분이 포인트를 준다. 일체형으로 그립과 바디, 바디와 노브가 만나는 부분도 거의 티가 나지 않아 캡에 각진 클립이 특별한 느낌을 더한다. 클립과 그립이 스테인리스로 되어있는데 똑같이 브러시 패턴이 들어가 있어 이질감을 주지 않는다. 바디에는 잉크의 양을 확인할 수 있는 창이 있지만, 일체감을 해치진 않는다. 닙은 반쯤 덮여 있는 후드닙인데 이는 잉크 마름을 방지한다. 기능주의 디자인답게 디테일에 모두 이유가 있다.
Beyond its external beauty, the writing experience of the fountain pen is excellent. It writes very smoothly on paper, and thanks to the hooded nib mentioned earlier, there is almost no issue with ink drying. Personally, I prefer pens with a bit of weight, providing a sense of stability. Someday, I would like to experience the stainless steel model as well. One inconvenience is the tedious cleaning process common to all piston-filler fountain pens. However, due to the unique personality of those who use fountain pens despite this inconvenience, I am likely to continue using it consistently. Despite having several other pens that offer a different feel with each new ink refill, there is a certain charm in using the Lamy 2000 with a simple and solid feel, especially when paired with enjoyable and special inks. It’s like watching an elderly grandfather dance to fast-paced music. Even if I continue to purchase more fountain pens in the future, it seems unlikely that the usage time of the Lamy 2000 will significantly decrease. I want to continue enjoying the modest design that is loved across generations and stay together for an even longer time.
외적인 아름다움을 넘어 만년필의 필감도 훌륭하다. 종이에 아주 매끄럽게 써지며 앞에서 언급한 후드닙 덕분에 잉크가 마르는 일도 거의 없었다. 필자는 개인적으로 안정감이 느껴지는 조금 무게가 있는 펜을 선호하는데 언젠가 기회가 된다면 스테인리스 모델도 경험해보고 싶다. 한가지 불편한 점은 모든 피스톤 필러 만년필이 가진 문제로 세척이 귀찮다는 것이다. 하지만 이런 불편함 때문에 만년필을 쓰는 특이한 성격 때문에 앞으로도 꾸준히 사용하게 될 것 같다. 새로운 잉크를 넣을 때 마다 새로운 느낌을 주는 만년필의 매력에 빠져 몇 자루의 다른 펜을 가지고 있지만 라미2000 처럼 단순하고 단단한 느낌의 펜에 유쾌하고 특별한 잉크를 사용할 때 의외의 매력을 더 느끼게 되는 것 같다. 마치 노년의 할아버지가 빠른 비트의 음악에 맞춰 춤을 추는 느낌이랄까. 앞으로 많은 만년필을 더 구매하더라고 라미2000의 사용시간이 많이 줄어들 것 같지는 않다. 세대를 넘어 사랑받는 소탈한 디자인과 더 오랜 시간 함께 하고 싶다.
