Pieter Bruegel the Elder (circa 1527 to 1569) is a Dutch painter who, despite a relatively short life, had a significant impact on the art world. While other painters of his time focused on classical subjects, Bruegel primarily painted landscapes, a genre that was not receiving much attention at the time. Bruegel’s early life is not well-documented, and his upbringing remains unknown, but many of his paintings suggest a high level of education and affluence.

In 1551, Bruegel joined the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, where he studied under the painter Pieter Coecke van Aelst for five years. After Coecke van Aelst’s death, Bruegel briefly took on the role of master in the guild before leaving for Italy, where he met numerous famous artists. Returning to Antwerp in 1555, he collaborated with the printing company Hieronymus Cock, and their first project, the “Large Landscape Series (1555-1556),” was a great success, leading to a continued collaboration with Cock and the creation of many more artworks.

In the later part of his life, Bruegel began painting scenes that deviated from the predominant focus on classical themes in the art world. He turned his attention to landscapes beyond Greek and Roman mythology, as well as genre paintings depicting the daily lives of peasants. Satire and humorous elements characterize his works, reflecting wit in the societal context of his time. Bruegel employed interesting compositions, using diagonal arrangements of foreground and background elements. While his works appeared more complex than the refined style of the Renaissance, they were vivid and full of detail. He also explored a wide spectrum of colors, expressing warmth, joy, coldness, and melancholy in various paintings. Despite using a broad range of colors, there is a consistent tone across many of his works.
브뤼헐은 생애 후반부에 회화를 그리기 시작했는데 앞서 언급했듯이 당시 대부분의 예술가들이 고전적 주제에 몰두하는 분위기에서 본인만의 주제를 찾는다. 그는 그리스 로마 신화를 벗어나 당시로서는 생소한 풍경화에 집중한다. 또한 소작농들의 일상생활을 묘사하는 장르회화에 몰두한다. 풍자와 희화화 또한 그의 작품의 특징으로 당시 사회상 속에서 위트를 찾아볼 수 있다. 그는 흥미로운 구도를 만들기 위해 일반적으로 많이 쓰는 방식을 사용했다. 전경과 배경을 대각선으로 배치하지만 르네상스 양식의 정교함보다는 복잡해 보이는 디테일이 살아있는 그림을 그렸다. 소작농들의 서로 다른 모습을 보고 있으면 한편의 옴니버스 영화를 보는 것 같은 느낌이 든다. 또한 다양한 색감을 모두 활용해 따뜻함, 즐거움, 차가움과 음산함을 모두 표현했다. 넓은 스펙트럼의 색을 사용하면서도 여러 작품에서 비슷한 톤을 찾아볼 수 있다.
Bruegel overcame a significant age difference to marry Mayken Coecke van Aelst, the daughter of his former master, and together they had a daughter and two sons. Although the daughter is not well-known, both sons demonstrated talent as artists. Bruegel’s death in 1569 is unclear, but it is presumed to be due to illness.
그는 옛 스승의 딸인 메이켄 쿠에커 반 알스트(Mayken Coecke van Aelst)와 약 20세의 나이 차이를 극복하고 결혼하여 딸과 두 아들의 가정을 이룬다. 딸은 잘 알려지지 않았지만 두 아들은 모두 예술가로서 재능을 발휘한다. 1569년 그의 사인은 불분명하지만 질병으로 인한 것으로 추정된다.
