The Birth of a Genius Painter Who Illuminated Europe

Angelica Kauffman (1741–1807) was an influential artist in 18th-century Europe and one of the most important representatives of Neoclassicism. Born in Chur, Switzerland, she grew up receiving art education from her father, Johann Joseph Kauffman, from a young age. Kauffman exhibited particular talent in portrait and figure painting, expanding her artistic experiences while traveling through various European cities. She was deeply influenced by the arts of ancient Greece and Rome during her time in Italy, which profoundly impacted her and was reflected in her work.

A Brilliant Rise in England

In 1766, Kauffman moved to England, where she found great success, receiving numerous portrait commissions from the British aristocracy and royalty. Her talents were quickly recognized, and in 1768 she was selected as one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts in Britain. This was a highly unusual achievement for a female artist of the time, and she was one of only two women involved with the Royal Academy (the other being Mary Moser). In addition to portraits, Kauffman excelled in historical and mythological subjects, often incorporating moral values and classical virtues, particularly focusing on female protagonists.

An Artist Depicting Classical Virtue

One of her representative works, Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, Pointing to Her Children as Her Treasures, features the heroic Roman woman Cornelia and emphasizes devotion to family and the moral virtues of women. Another work, Self-Portrait Hesitating Between the Arts of Music and Painting, portrays Kauffman herself, torn between music and painting, demonstrating her versatility and deep passion for the arts. These works played a crucial role in establishing Kauffman not just as a portraitist but as an artist who embodied classical ideals and philosophical values.

그녀의 대표작 중 하나인 “Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, Pointing to Her Children as Her Treasures“는 고대 로마의 영웅적인 여성 코넬리아를 주인공으로 하여, 가족에 대한 헌신과 여성의 도덕적 미덕을 강조한 작품이다. 또한, “Self-Portrait Hesitating Between the Arts of Music and Painting“은 음악과 회화 사이에서 고민하는 자신의 모습을 표현한 자화상으로, 그녀의 다재다능함과 예술에 대한 깊은 열정을 보여준다.

An Artist Amid Scandal

Despite her artistic success, Kauffman’s personal life was not without controversy. In 1767, she married Count de Horn, who claimed to be a Swedish nobleman but turned out to be a fraud, leading to the collapse of their marriage. This incident became a significant public scandal, causing her psychological distress. She later remarried the Italian painter Antonio Zucchi in 1781 and returned to Italy to continue her artistic career. Although these events temporarily impacted her career, she maintained her artistic reputation and remained active.

Rivalry with Gainsborough and Friendship with Reynolds

During her time in England, Kauffman was often mentioned in relation to her rivalry with the famous portrait painter Thomas Gainsborough. Both artists worked for the British elite, frequently being compared to one another and rumored to be in competition. Her relationship with Joshua Reynolds, the first president of the Royal Academy, was also often discussed. Some speculated that Reynolds had romantic feelings for Kauffman and that there may have been romantic tension between them, although there is no solid evidence to support this. They appeared to respect each other’s artistic talents as colleagues.

Collaboration with Bartolozzi and Printmaking Art

Kauffman maintained a close collaborative relationship with Italian engraver Francesco Bartolozzi, who produced delicate engravings based on her works, helping to spread her fame. Rumors circulated about a possible personal connection between them, but there is no concrete evidence to support this. Additionally, some speculated that Kauffman was linked to the Freemasons, a secret organization seeking political and social reforms at the time, although no clear evidence supports this claim.

She excelled in historical and mythological subjects, achieving significant artistic accomplishments. Her artistic talent, combined with her broad knowledge and intellectual charm, earned her many patrons and supporters. Her works are considered important contributions to the ideals of Neoclassicism. Kauffman’s life and art continue to inspire many artists today, and her influence remains a significant part of European art history.
